Diaries of an Intern – The Kids Next Door

Oh remember the 80s. The hairdos were big. The jewelry was bigger. But, the movies… priceless. The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a handful of others were a steady diet of youth in the 80s. Those who were lucky enough to grow up in the decade idolized, internalized and identified with the Rat Pack and other characters from John Hughes movies.

We didn’t just want to be them, we felt like we were them. Whether we were the hot girlfriend, the mischievous teenager or the loyal, yet geeky friend, Hughes was able to bring the good, bad and ugly out of characters to make them icons for a generation.

With Hughes’s death on August 6th, we will now tuck him away in our memories with his cherished movies. Maybe we can pretend he has retired in Shermer, IL – the fictional suburb of Chicago where most of his movies were set.

We can certainly learn one thing from his legacy. “Life moves pretty fast. So, if we don’t stop and look around once in a while, we might just miss it.”

Take a look back at the movies that shaped and inspired a generation. Teenage Wasteland
