I Heart Me
Call it the princess mentality, the “Trophy Generation” or Generation Y… America is entitled enough with its individualistic attitude and the "look at me" mentality, but three recent marketing campaigns are encouraging more selfish Americans to think everything was made by them for them. It started with FUBU and it has come full circle with Yahoo!, Microsoft and HTC.
Yahoo! issued its “It’s Y!ou” marketing campaign in September with the main focus being none other than YOU! Everything’s about the customer, the experience, what you want, when you want it. Of course you want to give us what we want… but do we have what we need Yahoo!?
Microsoft issued its Windows 7 operating system a few weeks ago. I honestly don’t know if it works, if it’s better than Vista or what, but I know that their advertising campaigns claim that each customer took part in building Windows 7. The campaign is actually pretty smart. It makes you feel like your hate letters and ransom notes were actually read by Bill Gates himself, and you feel connected to the brand and company. The people in the ads share your same sentiments and feelings and are giving Windows a second chance. And you should too. Heck, you created it.
Lastly, I always like a good teaser campaign, like this one from HTC. Again, the focus is YOU (and me) in a blatant way. Companies are customizing and personalizing like crazy and me likes it, of course. It was all my idea!
