News is everywhere. Are you?
You can always count on the Pew Research Center for an entertaining study, and this recent one on media consumption was no exception. The survey asks one universal question, “Got Media?”
Although the answers weren’t staggering, they do say a lot about how we consumer media – and how PR professionals should cater their outreach:
“On a typical day…”
- 78 percent of Americans get news from a local TV station, while 73 percent use the national TV networks, such as CNN, FOX News and MSNBC, or the national nightly reports like CBS, NBC and ABC
- 61 percent of news hounds find their stories online
- Local radio is still strong earning 54 percent interest
- Surprisingly, 50 percent still rely on the local paper for news; yet, only 17 percent are reading the national publications, such as New York Times, USA Today or The Wall Street Journal
Despite the lack of interest in national print, 9 out of 10 adults peruse multiple sources for news. A special note to PR professionals who tend to dedicate their pitches to one or two platforms: Keep diversifying.
From blogs to news bureaus, cable news to community papers, if you have a good pitch there will always be someone to listen to it.
