D/FW Media: Another One Leaves TV 'Kwikly'

In Dallas, the only thing dropping more than flies are good reporters. And this past week was no exception, according to the great UncleBarky.com.

We've seen many go by the wayside for bad restructuring, better opportunities and just plain tired of the media business, but NBC 5's former general assignment reporter Grant Stinchfield just provided the most original explanation for wishing the media world - and us flacks - adieu.

Stinchfield, whose last day at the Fort Worth-based, NBC-owned station is Friday, said he is buying a Kwik Kar Auto Lube and Repair business in Irving (Beltline Road just north of Hwy. 183).

Okay, soooo... I know where I'm going for an oil change, but really? Is it that bad out there in Big D TV Land?

Grant was one of the good guys. If you ever pitched him for a client or a trend story, you know. He listened and appreciated what we public relations professionals did for a living. He got it, and because of that, we got it too.

He will still be attached to the media however. For those that don't know, his lovely bride is GMT's Amy Vanderoef, who is another one that gets it... even if she doesn't seem to "get" my phone calls. Sigh.

So, for those considering jumping the wall of PR into the press, may I present Grant's thoughts:

"The TV business has drastically changed over the past few years and I felt it was best to try and control my own destiny before NBC Universal controlled it for me," he said. "With decreasing revenues and decreasing viewership, I am not sure how the market can sustain five or six news outlets all covering the same stories. I think local TV news has some serious challenges ahead. I figured I would get off the ship before it sinks."

For those who can read between the lines, I think we in PR get that too. Farewell Grant. I'll check you the next time my transmission needs a flushing.
