HCK2 INTERNally: What's a 60 percent increase cost?

Editor's Note: See there, Netflix. Your price hike has even pturbed our interns. And when you get paid in sno cones, bottle caps and free microwavable Mac-N-Cheese, that 60 percent increase can really get to a girl. Sick 'em Melanie.

I do not currently subscribe to Netflix; however, I do not think $15.98 is a bad price to pay to watch a bunch of TV shows and movies. It is lower than the price of buying one DVD and much cheaper than taking the family to go see just one movie. (Um, how in the heck do you know that? I haven't seen any pictures on your desk, ma'am. Moving on. ~Ed.)

However, I do think sending all of your customers an email informing them of the 60 percent price increase and automatically subscribing them to the most expensive option is a little ridiculous.

I mean I am just a public relations intern and even I know better than that.

After Netflix announced its 60 percent price increase, consumers flocked to social media sites to voice their opinions. Netflix’s Facebook page had more than 59,000 comments. “Dear Netflix” was a trending topic on Twitter for most of the day.  A few of my favorite tweets are provided below.

@TwitterWhale tweeted:

Dear Netflix, I'm the only one allowed to raise prices without asking permission. Sincerely, Gas.

@Trophiated posted:

#DearNetflix it's not me really... it's you. Please don't hate the fact that I've moved on without you.

And our own @ShawnPaulWood wrote:

Dear @Netflix, I'm fine with the 60% price hike. Really. But may I have a chocolate on pillow at least? Signed, It's so cold in here.

Could this public relations nightmare have been avoided? Yes.

I do not understand why Netflix posted the new changes on their social media sites, but did not respond to any comments or do any sort of damage control.

Many of the comments were from outraged consumers about the “upcharges” but said they only watched the streaming videos.  Netflix could – and should – have gone online and told these customers that if they stopped and thought about it for a minute (instead of jumping on the hater bandwagon) they would actually be paying $2 less a month to only stream videos.

Will you be sticking with Netflix or will you be thinking inside the Redbox?
