According to the media, we're still number one
Much to the chagrin of some news editors hither and yon, according to one survey, public relations professionals are still the number one source for news stories.
Oriella PR Network polled 500 journalists and found the following:
- 47 percent use Twitter to find stories (up from 33 percent in 2010)
- 35 percent use Facebook (up from 25 percent in 2010)
- 62 percent use... wait for it... PR professionals
And for the neigh-sayers out there on the Interweb, never fear. Sure, with a deluge of pestering emails and calls, flacks are bound to get in front of a reporter at some point. Even if some of us lay in front of parking spaces at TV stations. (I've... uh, read books.)
So, get this:
22 percent of respondents mentioned most of their first leads come from good press releases.
Sure, not the commercial, superlative-laden releases many editors have been accustomed to frequent. I mean the ones that highlight a trend, a topic and a client creating a solution. Those releases are becoming the boondoggle in a content-heavy, hyperlocal world.
So, keep up the good work, Flacks. Stay in touch with what your clients need and what the press wants, and you will help the world go 'round.
