Red Raider Roll Call

Many times, in PR, it’s all about who you have in your network. But, you can’t just rely on a LinkedIn connection to keep you top-of-mind. Networking is about learning how you can serve others, not collecting numerous business cards for your rolodex so it can sit on your desk collecting dust.

Maintaining relationships is key in our profession and something we practice on a daily basis with clients, media, business professionals and academic circles. If you make it a point to follow up or touch base throughout the year in ways other than an email, you stand a much better chance of growing a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship. Scheduling in-person meetings or lunches, attending networking events, sending congratulatory cards for achievements, engaging on social media sites, volunteering, or even just making a phone call to say ‘hi’ every once in a while are all great ways to keep in touch and strengthen a connection.

Yesterday evening, Ashley Hoptay and I had the opportunity to do just that via Skype for our alma mater, Texas Tech University.

We participated in a video conference call to speak with a group of students studying public relations. Tech PR is the public relations student organization for the College of Mass Communications that both Ashley and I were involved in when we were undergraduates. As proud alumnae, it was a pleasure to see how the organization has grown under great faculty and student leadership and to be able reengage and give back to the institution that helped us give us a strong start in our careers.

With the amount of technology we have today, it’s easier than ever to stay connected and maintain relationships as long as you’re willing to invest the time to do so. The more you invest, the more opportunities will discover.
