Most would agree it is ideal to have a crisis plan in place prior to a major event. But as the nature of a crisis, it is not planned and there is often little warning. But, even a little planning can help.

As an example, while HCK2 Partners was developing a crisis communication plan for Fairpay Solutions - a leading provider of specialty bill review services - the company was hit by a legislative crisis that could be detrimental to sales in Florida moving forward. While there was significant work to be done, the completed internal research and crisis communication plan already underway proved to be invaluable for dealing with a proposed rule change to Florida’s current procedure for workers’ compensation outpatient payment standards.

Immediately after Fairpay realized the extreme nature of the rule change, the company held a crisis communications team meeting. During this discussion, HCK2 recommended a lobbying firm and the idea to develop a grassroots campaign to contact retailers and medical providers and invite them to join in the opposition.

HCK2 has worked with Fairpay to organize the grassroots effort and create opposition letters meant to influence the Department of Financial Services, Division of Workers’ Compensation. Today, legislation is on hold due to outside pressure created by Fairpay’s efforts, including letters, private studies and meetings set up by the lobbing firm with key Florida politicians. HCK2 continues to work side-by-side with Fairpay to be prepared for and quickly react to any new developments.
