Giving Back to Veterans Who Defend Our Freedom

Homes for Defenders of Freedom, an HCK2 client and outgrowth of Defenders of Freedom, had the honor of presenting a new, custom-built home in Dallas for disabled U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Curtis Zachary and his family on July 12, 2013.

The first veteran to whom Homes for Defenders of Freedom donated a home, Zachary served eight years in the U.S. Army, consisting of one tour in Cuba and two tours in Iraq. Upon return to the states, Zachary learned that as a result of injuries on deployment, he had traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and post-traumatic stress-disorder (PTSD), and still continues to suffer with neck and back injuries.

Because of his honorable service, Homes for Defenders of Freedom is pleased to award Zachary with a new home, enabling him to live a more normal, independent and productive life as his family adjusts to changes brought on by the war and resulting injuries.

Richard Lane, founder of Richard Lane Custom homes, said it was an honor to build and present the home to the Zachary family as a way to say “thank you.”

“I took on this project two years ago with the hopes we could touch the lives of those who fight to defend our freedom and give back to those who served honorably in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Lane said.

Homes for Defenders of Freedom builds and donates new, custom-built and mortgage-free homes to wounded and disabled veterans, who served honorably in Iraq and Afghanistan. This endeavor is only made possible through monetary donations, building materials and professional labor from individuals and companies who support our returning war Heroes.

The story of Homes for Defenders of Freedom’s donation and the presentation ceremony outside the Zachary family’s new home were featured on multiple media outlets, such as KTVT (channel 11) and My Sweet Charity, as well as KDFW (channel 4), KXAS (channel 5) and WFAA (channel 8).
