Hey Kids, Let's Practice Safe Tweeting

At what point do you acknowledge you have checked out from the world around you?
Better question, at what point is it “okay” to piggyback on a national news story and promote a dress by the media
doll diva, Kim Kardashian? Time to recruit some reputation management 101 crash courses, if you ask us. We have brought you a recent tweet from Celeb Boutique, a UK online retailer, which was posted online during the aftermaths of the Aurora, CO shooting:
“#Aurora is trending, clearly about our Kim K inspired #Aurora dress ;) Shop: celebboutique.com/aurora-white-pleated-v-neck-strong-shoulder-dress-en.html …”
As PR professionals, we are taught to look before we jump (although sometimes we tend to just take a flying leap) and be informed of what is going on around us, not just in the U.S. but in countries abroad.
With all the coverage of the Aurora shooting, let’s face it; most Americans knew exactly what Twitter was talking about. But what about those Twitter users who don’t live in the U.S.? Do we expect them to know what’s taking place in our culture when sometimes we can’t do the same?
The availability of social media allows us to push our clients out ASAP to our target audiences, but with that comes responsibility to be informed of current news. We have to be aware about what is being said and listen to online conversations.
It’s like your mom used to always say, “Stop, Look and
Listen Practice Safe Tweeting.”
Good news or bad news for your brand?
